H I S T O R Y

Kira's father was a soldier in the Shinra army while talks with Wutai were being conducted. While abroad, he met her mother and brought her back to the Sector 7 slums. About a year later, their daughter, Rain Kalendis was born. Shortly after that, her father was sent to fight in the Wutai war, and was sent home after sustaining serious injuries. It is currently unknown whether his injuries or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder caused him to become abusive, but between the ages of five and thirteen, Kira watched her mother being abused while being trained relentlessly by her once-loving father to be the perfect soldier.

At the age of thirteen, something snapped in her father. After he killed her mother, she took her revenge by setting their small slum house ablaze and leaving him to die. Two days later, she was apprehended and taken into custody by Shinra troopers. When they woke her from her two-day sleep, she gave her name as Rain Ashikira, forsaking her father's last name. By that point, however, the years of abuse and the nightmares after killing her father had taken their toll on her mind - for two years, she worked with Shinra psychologists to restore her to a semblance of mental health. Nevertheless, she remained with several reminders of the incident: her love of fire, and a hate and fear of authority, especially males.

As soon as she was deemed mentally sound enough, Kira was sent to the military academy in Junon. At first, she was being trained for a position in the Turks, but late in her training, she requested to be put in the SOLDIER program. After struggling through hardships as a cadet, she was finally raised to the rank of SOLDIER Third Class half a year after her eighteenth birthday. The mako treatments, along with the aid of her adopted brother, Kunsel Theian and her three best friends - Kiniarel, Gabriel, and Aylien - helped her to shed the preconceptions she had about the men in Shinra, and changed her outlook on life for the better.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Kira tends to look and act innocent, even playful, but aside from being occasionally confused on how to interact with someone on first meeting them, she is a generally cheerful person. When provoked, however, she has a tendency to fly into rages that are only satisfied when her opponent has been subdued or admits defeat. She worries about those moments afterwards, when she is alone, often wondering if that and the lack of empathy she feels when involved in battles is indicative of a personality that could go wrong like her father's.

She has a tendency to cling to other people, taking their purposes and causes as her own, and enduring any amount of pain or abuse for that person's sake. So far, the only person she has shown this devotion to is Shinra executive Scarlet West and Genesis Rhapsodos, who has agreed to take her as a student.
